Women Who Inspire: International Women's Day Edition
In honor of International Women's Day on Sunday, March 8th, our stylists wanted to share who their women inspirations were in fashion and in life.
"A woman who inspires me in both life and fashion is Iris Apfel. Even in her old age, she continues to inspire, create, and be her true self. She is courageous in her words and actions, as well as her style choices. Her wardrobe has been built over the years with designer pieces and unique vintage finds, as mixing high and low pieces has become her trademark. Her bold sense of style and zest for life are equally inspiring to me. One of my favorite quotes of hers is, "Life is gray and dull; you might as well have a little fun when you dress.""
"My grandmother, Connie Barnum, is my all-time favorite style icon. She survived the great depression, and being such a fashionista, she taught herself how to design her own clothing so she could always be in the "now.” She would create her dresses, pants and shirts from fabrics she would pick out from all over the world. Her go to look, like mine, was a turtleneck and a jacket with a statement piece of jewelry. To this day my cousins, aunts, mother and I still have various pieces of hers. I find it fascinating that with the little amount of resources she had at that point of her life that she was able to create such beautiful clothes. But in Connie fashion, she always accomplished what she put her mind to!"
"Rihanna is not only one of my favorite female public figures, but she’s also firmly in my top 5 overall. Obviously, her music is her bread and butter, but I love the moves she’s made in the fashion industry as well as beauty and skincare. I’m in love with the newly released, 500+ page photo book, which has allowed me to see her through a different lens: behind the scenes of her tours and vacations, with loved ones, and even her tattoo sessions. In everything, she’s been herself through and through and has grown into a woman who operates solely on her terms. She is in control of her own ship and has dressed flawlessly every step of the way."
"Mindy Kaling is certainly a woman that impresses me daily! She’s a hilarious comic, best-selling author, incredible actress, producer, director and a mother. And she does it with such great ease and style! Constantly rocking vibrant colors, bold patterns and killer bling, Mindy is also a true fashionista! My favorite part about her though is how she is continuously supporting and inspiring women every day with her incredible drive and upbeat attitude. She is, without a doubt, one to watch and learn from!"
"My mom, Betsy Castro, is my inspirational woman in life and in fashion. She took me and my sisters to the mall every Saturday growing up. We loved browsing all the stores and having lunch together. She taught me how important it was to dress appropriately for events and to always put my lipstick on! I didn’t appreciate how special theses Saturday’s were until I was an adult and now, we all live miles away from each other. We still love to shop when we are together and I now I get to shop with my daughters! My mom is the glue that holds our family together. She is my rock and she keeps me grounded. She will always give me her honest opinion and she’s my biggest cheerleader in life. She has taught me everything I know about love and being a great mom."
"Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is an internationally acclaimed Nigerian writer, poet, and speaker. She is best known for her speech and published essay, “We Should All Be Feminists,” which I like to keep on my nightstand and read to remind myself of how feminism truly benefits everyone. Chimamanda also has great style, which embraces both her femininity and Nigerian culture. She’s an awesome woman and such an inspiration to me!"
"Rachel Parcell, to me, embodies all that it means to be a mother, wife, blogger, and designer. Her faith and fresh outlook on life really inspires me to be the best I can be. I’ve followed her journey in fashion and life throughout the years and admire her dedication to both her business and her family. I think she is a great role model for women of all ages. Her close-knit family reminds me of my own. I also admire her modesty and dedication to encourage body positivity."
"Teniola "Tia" Adeola is the founder and designer of the designer label Tia Adeola. Inspired by her background in Art History and deep interest in the Renaissance period, Tia created her clothing line, Slashed, in 2016 in her dorm room at The New School. Tia formalized her business and transitioned the name of her brand from Slashed by Tia to Tia Adeola in preparation for her first official New York Fashion Week runway show which was Feb. 7th, 2020. She celebrates the female form and wants women to feel empowered in her creations, which is why she is an inspiration to me."
"Lee Miller could have easily had a very successful career as just a beautiful cover model for Vogue in the 1920’s but she wanted more. Her interest in photography took her to Paris where she studied and collaborated with Man Ray. In the 30’s, she traveled through Egypt creating surrealist landscape imagery and in the 40’s she documented war-torn Europe as a war reporter. The first time I saw an image of her I was overwhelmed by the light inside her. I am truly inspired by her beauty, strength, ambition and immense talent."
